Mental Health

Mental HealthMental health issues are disorders that cause thought and behavioral disturbances resulting in an inability to cope with life’s ordinary demands and routines. Today’s stressful lifestyle has made mental health issues a common condition among people of all ages. Depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and anxiety disorders are all forms of mental illness. The impact on your daily functioning due to the mental health issue makes it essential to get it treated.

Types of Mental Health Issues

Like physical illness, mental illness comes in different forms. It affects people of all ages, culture, educational and income levels. While depression is the most common form, there are other less known types. These conditions are often difficult to diagnose and require professional attention. There are over 200 classified mental illnesses.

Some of the most common conditions include:

Anxiety Disorder

Nervousness and tension are common during the course of routine activities. An anxiety disorder is diagnosed when the anxiety expressed is not proportionate to the situation, is uncontrollable and interferes with normal function. Fear and panic are expressed in the behavior and physical actions of a person with anxiety disorder. Generalized anxiety disorder, phobias, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder are different forms of anxiety disorder.

Mood Disorder

These disorders can be identified by persistent feelings of sadness or happiness, or fluctuations from extreme happiness to extreme sadness. Depression is the most common form of mood disorder. Suicide is the most dreaded outcome of major depressive disorders. Other types include bipolar disorder and dysthymic disorder.

Schizophrenia

A type of psychotic illness, schizophrenia is a serious brain disorder associated with distorted awareness and thinking. It is defined by the lack of ability to distinguish reality. Most common symptoms include hallucinations and delusions.

Eating Disorder

These disorders involve extreme conditions regarding weight and food. It can be diagnosed when a person experiences severe disturbances in eating behavior such as extreme reduction of food intake, overeating, or feelings of extreme concerns about body weight and shape. Anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating are the most common forms of eating disorders.

Causes and Symptoms

There is no single cause of mental disorders. They can be caused by a combination of biological, psychological and environmental factors. Upbringing, social exposure, substance abuse or addiction, stressful lifestyle, and unhealthy diet are factors that highly contribute to mental illness.

Mental illness needs a diagnosis done by professionals. Erratic thought patterns, confused thinking, lack of interest in pursuing daily life, social withdrawal and unexplained mood changes are a few symptoms associated with mental illness. Unlike physical diseases, mental disorders are difficult to identify which often leads to the severity of such conditions.
