Chances are that you or your family members only make appointments when you fall sick. From the common cold to a terrible and sudden pain to high fever, those are the common reasons to visit a doctor. Well, here’s another reason to visit the doctor – an annual checkup.

It is advised to go for an annual checkup even if you are feeling completely well.

Why? Here are 6 reasons.

Check your general health

An annual checkup is an excellent way to ensure that you are healthy. A regular checkup includes your doctor checking your blood pressure, weight, breathing, and vital signs. This may be followed by an examination of your head, neck, eyes, ears, mouth and general reflexes.

Your doctor is looking for any signs of abnormalities. It’s also a perfect opportunity for you to sit and talk to your doctor about any health concerns or ask for health advice.

Establish a baseline

A major problem with patients who only come once a blue moon is that the doctor is not completely aware of your health situation. However, by visiting the doctor regularly, she will grasp your health condition and understand what is healthy for you.

By knowing your health baseline, your doctor is able to effectively make future healthcare decisions when you are in need.

Update your vaccinations

Regardless of whether you are an adult or a child, vaccinations prevent diseases and aren’t exclusive to children. By preventing diseases, you avoid illness and costly expenses later on.

Screen test

Diseases such as breast and prostate cancer are on the rise. It is recommended that adults over the age of 50 get screened for breast and prostate cancer regularly. This is a five minute procedure and should be done as a safety measure.

The general checkup can also include a pap smear test. Pap smear tests are recommended every 3 years for women aged between 21 and 70 to identify cervical cancer early on.

Catch diseases early on

The best way to increase a person’s chance of survival is to catch the disease early on. What may seem like a harmless, recurring cough or an outgrowth on the skin may be a very harmful disease. A doctor would be able to suggest the best course of action.

Review medications

From time to time, you may have to start or increase the medications. Your annual medical checkup is the perfect time for the doctor to review your medications. By assessing your health, the medication may need to varied to give you better treatment.

Annual health checkups are simply about being proactive in maintaining your health. As you age, your body grows older and needs more maintenance checkup – and that’s exactly what an annual checkup is.
